Killington Insider
June 15, 2009
The last patch of snow has almost melted off Superstar Face and we’re pretty busy around here not only preparing for summer activities, but next winter as well.
First on to summer, the K-1 Gondola and the Pico Mountain Adventure Center open for the season on Friday, June 26 from noon to 4 p.m. for our United Way of Rutland County Fundraiser. All activities, including the Alpine Slide and mountain biking at Killington, are free with a suggested $10 donation to the United Way. Over the past four years, we have raised in excess of $30,000 for the United Way through our summer and winter season kickoffs. We’ll offer all our activities daily beginning Saturday June 27 through Labor Day, then weekends through September and daily the first couple weeks of October for foliage season.
Winter improvements are well underway as we continue to improve the on-mountain experience and overall resort efficiency as it relates to snowmaking and grooming. Here is a quick list of some of the improvements for both Killington and Pico:
Pico Mountain:
• Replacement of 122 snowmaking hydrants
• Upgrade to snowmaking pipe on Upper Pike
• Complete painting project on Knomes Knoll Triple
• New warming hut at summit
Killington:
• Replacing up to 2,000 feet of snowmaking pipe, including sections on Cascade and Great Eastern
• Lift painting: Ramshead Express towers; Superstar Express towers; Skyeship Gondola top terminal; Sunrise Triple towers; South Ridge Triple bottom terminal; Bear Mountain Quad chairs
• Re-grading of unload area of Skye Peak Express
• Re-grading of new Bittersweet trail section
• New warming hut at Killington Peak
In addition, we have a number of projects throughout our base areas that will take place this summer, more on that in future Killington Insider updates.
What's the delay opening the gondola? Would have loved to come up this weekend...

Hi Mike and thanks for your comment!
Crews are busy preparing the mountain for your summer opening on Friday, June 26th from noon to 4 p.m. for our United Way Day at both Killington and Pico Mountain. Rosey and the trail crew boys have been working on the 45+ miles of mtb trails for the past two weeks, and despite quite a bit of rain this month, the trails will be ready to ride on the 26th.
Beginning Saturday, June 27th, both Killington and Pico will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the meantime, Mountain Bike and Adventure Center Season Passes are on sale now at www.Killington.com

What is with the K1 Camera? It will not zoom or pan correctly. It seems to be severly limited in function. Where is the Bear maountain Cam?

Hi Rob!
We have opened up the parameters for the K-1 cam so the entire area is now viewable. The Bear Mountain cam will return again next winter when Bear Mountain opens. We will also have a new cam at Pico Mountain next year as well.

Would Killington/Pico consider creating an 'informal' ski group for senior skiiers - We had one at Mount Snow which was modestly supported by the defunct Am Ski Co but enabled our group to access lifts asbout 1/2 hr before opening on selected weekdays, tokens for coffee/hot chocolate and sometimes we even got a leader to take us over new, rarely used intermediate runs.
Now that I moved north to Clarendon and Killington/Pico is my home mountain, I was disappointed that a similar group doesn't exist. I'll be happy to help out if you guys would support. THOUGHTS?

It is something that we would be interested in looking at a bit closer. We strive to open the K-1 Gondola early on Saturday's for Season Pass holders already. Send me an email at thorrocks@killington.com and we'll discuss.

regarding the warming hut at the peak is it possible to relocate it to the top of the south ridge triple area as not only will it be skier accessible from the peak gondola ,but also the canyon and glade chairs as well as more importantly the coldest chair on the hill aka south fridge triple. at this location 4 lift serviced areas would have a warming hut not just the gondola riders and skiers could get to any Killington base area from this location.
also if you were to sell add food/soup ect you might just make a few bucks during the peak renovations,
